Fort Logan Mental Health Center, Denver Self-report measures have well-known drawbacks for assessing unseen processes. This article suggests an alternative strategy that utilizes psychophysiological procedures. The article presents an illustrative study that tests a key hypothesis of distraction conflict theory-that audience observation is distracting. As predicted, a mechanical distracter and an audience had parallel effects on reaction time, skin conductance, and cardiac deceleration.
