Don't Blame Memory for People's Faulty Reports on What Influences their Judgments

Nisbett and Wilson (1977) provided evidence that people are unable to report the influence of external factors on their judgment processes. That article has been criticized on various grounds. In particular, it has been criticized for the use of retrospective questioning that may have allowed memory decay. In this study, three Nisbett and Wilson experiments were replicated. Some subjects used a concurrent-reporting technique designed to enable them to note for themselves the effects of stimuli on their judgment processes as they occurred. Concurrent reporting had no consistent effect on recognition of external influences on judgments.
