Meta-Analytic Contributions to the Literature on Prosocial Behavior

In recent years, investigators have increasingly applied meta-analytic techniques to the study of prosocial behavior. Meta-analytic procedures have been used to summarize across numerous studies, to examine the differences among subsets of studies that differ in critical ways, and to test theoretically derived hypotheses. Particular areas of focus have included the relation of prosocial behavior to perspective taking moral reasoning, and mood; testing theoretical assertions regarding the role of mood state in prosocial behavior; helping behavior in urban versus rural settings; and the effectiveness and bases of the foot-in-the-door effect. The contributions of meta-analysis to the study of these topics are discussed, as are some problems with the literature.
