Evaluating the Interpersonalness of Personality Scales

Michael B. Gurtman

University of Wisconsin-Parkside

The two-dimensional circumplex of interpersonal behavior can provide a useful framework for evaluating the interpersonalness of personality constructs. In the present study, subjects completed a measure of interpersonal behavior (the Interpersonal Circle), along with a number of common personality scales. Analyses showed that personality scales differ in characteristic inter personalness, defined in terms of vector length and angular displacement in a two-dimensional space. The apparent content of a scale is not necessarily a good indicator of the interpersonalness of that scale.
