Personality Theory and Identity AdvocacyFlorida State University One can only agree with the claim that more adequate theory is badly needed in the field of personality although it should be better understood that theory of personality has never been marked by precision and sophistication. There have been changes in preference in the aims of clinical psychologists. The challenge of competition between different theories might be stim ulating to the field, in which case more diversity is called for. Those who would urge that personaltiy become more identified with "advocacy of identity" may be fostering unwarranted narrowness, and, in any case, the past history of such theories is not grounds for optimism about the future.
