Liking for Common and Uncommon First Names

This study examined the effects of two subject characteristics (sex of subject, commonness of subject's own name) and two name character istics (sex of name, commonness of name being rated) on the ratings of first names. The primary results were: (1) common names were liked better than uncommon names, (2) male common names were liked better than female common names, whereas, male uncommon names were liked less than female uncommon names, and (3) differential ratings were obtained as a function of subject characteristics only for the ratings of common names.
