Evaluation and SocietyHarvard Graduate School of Education University of Massachusetts - Boston Evaluation research requires a different paradigm than classical experimental research. It requires a paradigm in which it is possible to use the multiple objectives of different groups as the framework within which decisions about data gathering are made. It requires decision-oriented rather than conclusion-oriented research, although experiments and other forms of data generation can be used. This article discusses the unique characteristics of evaluation research and the decision theoretic (Maut-Bayesian) paradigm which fulfills these special requirements.
