Control and the Coronary-Prone Behavior Pattern

Responses to Multiple Situational Demands

An experiment was conducted to examine the relation between the coronary-prone behavior pattern and responses to increased situational demands. Subjects performing a proofreading task were or were not required to attend to additional extraneous task demands. Whereas the proofreading performance of Type Bs was undermined by the need to respond to multiple demands, Type As displayed no such decrement in performance. It was suggested that Type As increased the effort they put forth when their control was threatened by extraneous demands.
