University of Pittsburgh Gergen has argued that American social psychological theorizing has had little impact outside the discipline because it has failed to challenge cultural assumptions. According to Gergen, this shortcoming could be remedied if theory construction were detached from data collection and hypothesis testing. An examination of Gergen's analysis reveals numerous misconceptions and inconsistencies. It is argued that social psychological theorizing could best advance by maintaining and extending its empirical foundation.
