Replication Failures in Personality and Social Psychology

Negative Findings or Mistaken Assumptions?

John C. Touhey

Florida Atlantic University

Recent failures to replicate several of the "basic"findings of social psychology may be the result of mistaken assumptions in the experimental study of social interaction. The reliabilities of most standardized experimental procedures are unknown, and the cultural processes that define specific laboratory manipulations vary among different subject populations. Given these limitations, it may not be appropriate to view replication failures as negative findings.
