Beautiful Friends and Ugly Strangers

Radiation and Contrast Effects in Perceptions of Same-Sex Pairs

Does the physical attractiveness of one's same sex peers affect the perceptions that others have of him or her? Subjects rated male or female targets who were either associated or unassociated with an attractive or unattractive same-sex other. Results indicated that targets were rated more positively when in the mere presence (unassociated) of an unattractive other and when associated by friendship with an attractive other. The results were interpreted as indicating the operation of two quite different processes, both based on physical attractiveness, underlying judgments of others.
